About

Dr. Joseph M. Sherrill is a third generation orthopaedic surgeon and native of Birmingham, Alabama. He is a well known and respected expert in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions and/or injuries of the upper extremity and hand. He is board certified in both orthopaedic surgery and surgery of the hand. Dr. Sherrill is a graduate of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama, and he completed his orthopedic surgery residency and hand surgery fellowship at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

Dr. Sherrill has been in private practice in Birmingham since 1981, initially with his father Dr. John Sherrill, Jr. (1981-1993), later at Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center (1993-2003), then at Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Clinic of Alabama PC (2004-2014) and, most recently, at Sherrill Orthopedics Sports and Hand Center.

He has a special interest in sports-related hand injury and has served as a hand consultant for most major universities and high school programs in Alabama, as well as for many professional athletes.

He has also served as President of the Jefferson County Orthopaedic Society (1995) and President of the Alabama Orthopedic Society (1997).  He is a proud member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS), the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), and a fellow in the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI).

Dr. Sherrill has a special interest in teaching and, since 2007, has served as a clinical instructor in the Hand Fellowship Program at the University of Alabama Birmingham and is actively involved in the training of the next generation of hand surgeons.

Dr. Sherrill is recognized as Best Doctors and Who’s Who.

He and his wife Sallie have four children Chris, John, Ginger, and Lizzie and four grandchildren Henry and Clara Wimberley, and Madden and Johnnie Sherrill.

His hobbies include fishing, hunting, hiking, bicycling, gardening, and wildlife habitat management.
